About Us
Crooked Run Farm is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley near Woodstock, Virginia.
We provide the freshest vegetables and most vibrant flowers and bedding plants in the Valley!
Thanks to the Lovettsville Farmers Cooperative for helping me to get started in 2013!
We use natural fertilizers - we make our compost from manure, sawdust, grass clippings, leaves and pine needles. A pile is started and layers added throughout the year, turning and mixing the "ingredients" until a sweet smelling, crumbly soil is achieved. We also buy composted cow manure locally.
A Little Bit About Us
The first year of our garden was a race between getting the harvest in before the weeds hid the vegetables from view! We learned a few lessons from that experience:

create raised rows for planting

fill in furrows with newspaper pages covered with grass clippings

discard damaged and overripe vegetables into the compost pile

turn the garden at the end of the season, after removing plant waste
We've since learned to keep as much of the open soil between the row crops covered with newspaper / grass clippings, and the soil under all the vining plants covered with landscape fabric.
Pest Control
We use no pesticides, insecticides or fungicides in the garden. We lose some produce, but it is worth the trade off with food we can eat straight from the plant..
